Which skills do we look for in our production operatives?

​Sometimes, our production line jobs do not require previous experience. If this is the case, it will be stated clearly in the job description. For example, the job description may say: 

• No experience required 
• Ability to demonstrate analytical thinking 
• Must have astute problem solving skills to solve production issues 
• Immense attention to detail – able to work cautiously but efficiently on the production line 
• Able to use power tools safely and effectively 
• Ability to stand, walk and lift for extended periods of time 

If specific experience is required, it will be stated explicitly in the job description when you apply. For instance, hiring companies may ask for: 

• 1+ years experience working in a warehouse 
• Reliable mode of transportation 
• Ability to lift 50 pounds, unassisted 

Generally speaking, certificates are not necessary to get hired, but they can help production workers to display their skills and stand out from the crowd of applicants. Some common certifications for production operatives include: 

• Certified IPC specialist: This certification recognises that the recipient has an understanding of acceptance criteria for electronics 
• Certified automation profession: This certification shows that the holder has comprehensive knowledge of automation and controls 
• Good Manufacturing Practices Facility Certification: This certification demonstrates a thorough understanding of various manufacturing guidelines 
• Certified production technician: This certification shows that the recipient demonstrates clear mastery of advanced manufacturing techniques 

How to prepare for your role as a production line worker.

There’s a variety of things to look out for before you start your production operative jobs.

This could include: 

• Specific uniform requirements and whether or not uniform, such as safety shoes and safety glasses, will be provided 
• Health and safety training – if this is mandatory, you will be invited to complete this before your first shift
