Flexible Work in the UK: A secondary job or the future of employment?

For many, flexible, temporary work is not just an option but a necessity. Whether balancing multiple roles, pursuing education, or seeking a better work-life balance, the demand for temporary and adaptable employment continues to grow. But what does flexibility really mean for workers in the UK retail sector? And how well does it align with business needs?

A recent survey carried out by Coople  with  over 300 temporary workers from the retail sector offers valuable insights – highlighting key expectations, challenges, and opportunities for both workers and employers.

Finding the right balance

When choosing a temporary job, flexibility is the top priority for workers. According to our survey, 20% of respondents identified the flexibility of working hours (such as shift duration) as the most important factor. Salary follows closely behind at 17%, while 13% value the distance to the workplace.

Other important considerations include the work environment and team dynamics (12%) and the opportunity for long-term employment (11%). Training and development opportunities are also valued by 10% of respondents, highlighting that professional growth remains a key motivator.

This wide range of priorities shows that for temporary workers, finding the right role isn't just about the paycheck – it's about achieving a balance between flexibility, personal development, and a positive work environment.

A workforce that fills the gaps

Staff shortages are a reality in UK retail. An overwhelming 95% of temporary workers have encountered some form of understaffing – whether due to illness, unexpected absences, or seasonal fluctuations. This is where flexible workers step in, offering immediate support and ensuring businesses continue running smoothly.

Cooplers are not only ready to adapt – they thrive in fast-paced environments. In fact, 76% are prepared to step in at short notice, from same-day requests to covering shifts within three days. Furthermore, they’re willing to work when staffing is typically most challenging, including weekends, public holidays, and peak seasons like Christmas, Black Friday, and major sporting or cultural events. Their readiness and flexibility make them a valuable asset for businesses looking to maintain smooth operations year-round.

The value of temporary workers

The idea that temporary work equals inexperience is a misconception. In fact, flexible workers bring diverse qualifications and backgrounds to the table. Notably, 51% hold a university degree – demonstrating a high level of education among the workforce.

This translates into clear benefits for employers: skilled, adaptable workers who can integrate quickly, bring fresh perspectives, and contribute meaningfully to business operations.

Beyond pay: What matters most to temporary workers?

While salary remains a key factor, soft benefits play a crucial role in job satisfaction. When selecting a temporary role, workers consider:

  • Work environment and team dynamics (38.7%)
  • Opportunities for long-term employment (35.8%)
  • Training and development opportunities (31.8%)

This suggests that businesses focusing on professional growth and workplace culture can attract and retain motivated temporary staff more effectively.

Feeling valued: How well are temporary workers integrated?

Job satisfaction among flexible workers is strong, but there is room for improvement. While 53% feel treated equally to permanent staff, and 62% report no biases in the workplace, nearly half still perceive a divide.

Addressing this gap – through better team integration, feedback, and access to workplace resources – can enhance motivation, loyalty, and overall workforce effectiveness.

Conclusion

Our retail survey highlights an evolving work landscape where flexibility, education, and workplace culture shape the experience of temporary workers. While many see retail as a secondary income source, they bring valuable skills, experience, and reliability to businesses.

Employers that prioritise fairness, inclusion, and professional development will not only strengthen their teams but also position themselves as forward-thinking, desirable workplaces. With Coople, businesses can bridge staffing gaps efficiently – connecting with a workforce that values both flexibility and opportunity.
