Introducing Selina

Selina has been a part of the Coople community since 2017. Since joining the Coople community, Selina has worked temporarily in a variety of hospitality positions before joining JustEat’s permanent team as a Technical Support Specialist.

Why did you join Coople?

“I joined Coople when I was at university back in 2017. I was looking for temporary work and I had worked in hospitality before, so I had lots of transferable skills. I thought Coople was a good way to earn money on the side and meet different people so I started working with Coople from there.”

What industry did you first work in with Coople and how did you transition into a permanent role from there?

“My first job was within hospitality. I worked as a waitress and in various bar positions with event companies. I heard about long-term job opportunities being advertised from JustEat, which sounded interesting. However, at the time, I had my hands full with university and the roles were full-time which didn’t work with my schedule.”

“I mainly did hospitality shifts with Coople while at university. After I graduated, I started actively searching for more long-term roles. Since I had also previously worked in an office, I had a lot of customer service experience. This gave me transferable skills that have aided me in my career development and have allowed me to get this permanent role with JustEat.”

What are your personal/professional goals and how did temporary work help you to achieve them?

“Temporary work really helped me in terms of maintaining a healthy social life and work-life balance. After I graduated from university, I wanted to have a break and I didn’t want to rush into anything where I wouldn’t have time to relax, explore my interests and meet people. That’s why Coople was so great for me: I could choose my own hours and work as much as I wanted to, so I could make time for my friends and family. It also meant I could choose where I worked. I got to work across a range of venues, which has really helped my career development.”

How has temporary work supported your career development?

“I’ve definitely gained the ability to work under pressure, and I’ve become a lot more organised too. When you’re a temporary worker, there’s an element of unpredictability. You have to be prepared for the next day when you’re applying to shifts since you may not know if you’ve been hired until the last minute. You must be alert, organised and ready.”

“I’ve also learnt how to work effectively with different people. Working with new people all the time is not that common, unless you work flexible hours with an agency. Since working with Coople, I’ve built my communication skills and learnt to adapt in different environments.”

What advice would you give to other temporary workers who are focusing on their career development?

“Keep applying. Even if you’re just working in a temporary role, make sure to work hard and do your best. You never know what that role can lead to since it can open doors to a permanent position in the future.”
